Cybercrime Update: Fear and Hope!
The past year has seen ever more critical cyber-security issue impact our work as lawyers – from the increase in ransomware and other cyber-extortion cases often targeting law firms to new laws governing the protection of data and developments in the law of privilege and ethics and even a new CLE requirement focused on lawyers and cyber-security ethics. Please join us for this interactive panel which will discuss these “ripped-from-the-headline” issues, why they are and can be scary, and also why, notwithstanding this, there is reasons for hope.
A Court-Packing History: Getting to Nine, A Switch in Time, and Recent Designs
The role and operation of the Supreme Court in our constitutional system and the functioning of the constitutional process by which the president nominates and by and with the advice and consent of the Senate appoints Justices to the United States Supreme Court has been the topic of much debate in recent years – but 2020 was not the first-time questions regarding the makeup of the US Supreme Court has crossed the landscape of political debate in this country.
We look back to the 1930s and the aftermath of Three Supreme Court decisions striking down New Deal legislation and we glance into the issue presented in the modern day.
The LGBTQ+ Community: Review of the Current Legal and Legislative Landscape
A panel discussion to review the Supreme Court’s recent decisions, including but not limited to: Groff v. DeJoy, 303 Creative, Inc. v. Elenis, Students for Fair Admissions Inc. v. President and Fellows of Harvard College and Students for Fair Admissions Inc. v. University of North Carolina, and their impact on the future of the LGBTQ+ community specifically and the Civil Rights movement generally. Panelists will present all sides of the issues and will provide guidance on how these decisions and current legislation may impact DEI conduct and policies within corporate organizations, law firms, as well as the wellbeing of marginalized communities.
Election Law
As we head into the 2024 election year, the courts are hearing a variety of election-related suits. The panel will discuss recent developments such as Judge Marrero’s decision
National Coalition on Black Civic Participation v. Wohl, the intersection of the First Amendment and voter intimidation, recent state legislation, and the DOJ’s position on voting legislation.
