Judge Charles L. Brieant, Jr. served on the Southern District of New York for thirty-seven years; for seven of those years, he was the Court’s Chief Judge. Throughout his career Judge Brieant was known for his sense of fairness, honesty, independence, as well as his love for history and humor. A fellowship has been established at the behest of Judge Brieant’s law clerks and judicial interns to honor his dedication to public service and to the federal courts by funding a summer internship position with the Court.

The Honorable Charles L. Brieant, Jr. Judicial Intern will work under the supervision of the Chief Judge to research and write about issues that confront the Court as a whole. The Intern may be asked to work with other judges, clerks, and interns to complete the assigned research projects. The Intern should be able to (1) work well both collaboratively and independently, (2) convey ideas effectively both orally and in writing, (3) display maturity, integrity, and professionalism, and (4) demonstrate an interest in humor, history, and public service.

The fellowship provides a $5,000 tuition or living-expense credit to the law student selected to serve as the Honorable Charles L. Brieant, Jr. Intern to the Court during the summer of 2010. Both first-year and second-year law students are encouraged to apply.

Applications should include: (1) a cover letter, (2) a resume, (3) a writing sample, and (4) a transcript. Applications are due by March 19, 2010 and should be sent to the following address:
